Hambidge Center
Hambidge Center is the second stop on my ceramics tour. This lush site is nestled into the woods of Georgia along the North Carolina border and also happens to be a deciduous rainforest!
The centre provides 2-8-week residencies for artists across disciplines in an intimate and secluded environment. However, the recenlty completed Antinori Village, designed by BLDGS architects will support expanded programming with new accommodations and a multifunctional space to host events and workshops.
The Hambidge Center, one of the Southeast's oldest residency programs, started with Mary Hambidge, a '4'-9" tall 'resourceful and vivacious redhead', who transformed the Center into a sustainable farm and weaving center after the passing of her partner, Jay Hambidge. The Center's history and Mary's remarkable journey are beautifully chronicled in two books - available on Center's website.
I was lucky to arrange my visit when a group of (very welcoming) artists unloaded their ware from their recent anagama kiln firing (a cave or tunnel-shaped kiln originating from China). The kiln typically takes three full days to fire and was fuelled by wood sourced from trees felled on the property. Thanks so much for including me in the day. It was an unforgettable experience!
