The Clay Studio

City, State

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Date

May 2024

During my visit, The Clay Studio was amidst celebrations of 50th anniversary, highlighted by stunning purpose-built four-story facility, effectively making it the most comprehensive community ceramics facilities (that I'm aware of) in any U.S. metropolitan city.

My head was spinning as it attempted to take the vast resources of the space and the enormous collection of works on display both in the store, gallery and in cabinets throughout the massive facility. The site included included several sprawling studios for public classes, expansive gallery space, dedicated member studios and all you could ask for by way of equipment and ancillary amenities. It felt so satisfying to see every space designed to fit the function.
I learned a bit about the planning process for the move to this new building and was impressed to learn about the extensive and considered community consultation process. @digsau_architecture did a fantastic job designing the 40,000-square-foot facility, which has space for a showroom, galleries, community access, classrooms, artist residents and administrative staff, kilns, storage and other flex spaces.
I also had the opportunity to tour through the Artist in Residence studios and meet a few of the artists (and their pets). I learned that the multi-year residency operates with a focus on helping the artist to establish viable pathways to continue their art professionally.
I felt inspired to learn more about about The Clay Studio’s commitment to ensuring diverse perspectives are represented across all its activities, from the design of the building, access to classes and professional development.
My sincere thanks to the staff and artists who offered their time for me today. What a joy to visit.!
